Abrax, Brabax und Califax begeben sich zur Berghöhle, in der der rätselhafte Einsiedler wohnen soll, von dem der inzwischen eingesperrte ehemalige Maharadscha ein kostbares Brahmanengewand gestohlen hatte. Da die Höhle leer und der Eremit nicht aufzufinden ist, räumen die Abrafaxe die verwüstete Höhle auf, bevor sie sich wegen der hereinbrechenden Nacht zur Ruhe legen. Califax findet vor der Höhle einen mit duftenden Kräutern gepolsterten Schlafplatz und bleibt daher von dem unheimlichen, nächtlichen Besucher verschont, der Brabax und Abrax entführt. Als er am nächsten Morgen seine Freunde sucht, stößt er auf seltsame Spuren und drei verwegen aussehende Reiter, die ihn recht unsanft über das Gewand und den Einsiedler befragen. Seiner Geschichte von einem Schneemenschen wollen sie keinem Glauben schenken, auch nicht, als sie ebenfalls eine merkwürdige Fußspur entdecken, weshalb sie Califax einfach mitnehmen.
